Are yoga socks a good idea?
There are a number of benefits which can be achieved by practicing yoga. Improved balance, coordination and flexibility are just a few of them. Becoming a seasoned yogi takes time, dedication and determination and it’s important to ensure you have the right equipment to help you achieve your yoga goals. One such tool is a pair of yoga socks. There are many reasons why yoga socks are an important part of your yoga kit. Let’s take a look.
1. Non-slip
Yoga socks have a textured, non-slip surface. Yoga poses, particularly the standing ones such as Warrior poses, require good grounding. Yoga socks help you to achieve this. Non-slip yoga mats are another essential for yoga practice, but even so, yoga socks give added traction and stability for your asanas allowing you to hold your poses for longer.
2. Hygiene
Yoga studio floors, gyms and all public shared areas carry dirt, fungi, hair, bacteria and other germs. Yoga socks help to keep the skin clean and avoid exposure to all of these unwelcome hazards.
3. Protection
Some yoga classes are held outside which means you would need to protect your feet from any dirt, debris, sharp stones, sticks and other objects which may be lying on the ground. Normal socks are not designed to protect the feet in the same way that yoga socks are. They are also slippy so would be unsuitable for your yoga practice. With no barrier between the foot and the floor, barefoot yoga also leaves your feet susceptible to injuries such as strains and sprains.
4. Warmth
Having cold feet is uncomfortable and the last thing you want whilst concentrating on your yoga poses is to be distracted by your cold feet. Yoga socks keep the feet warm and cosy and are the ideal solution for this.
5. Breathable
Most yoga socks are breathable and will wick away sweat which makes your yoga session more comfortable. Yoga socks are washable but always read the washing instructions before popping them in the washing machine.
7. Pilates
Just as they are ideal for yoga, yoga socks are also perfect for Pilates. Certain Pilates studios make it compulsory to wear socks with grip. Yoga socks are suitable for both yoga practice and Pilates.
6. Self conscious
Not everyone feels comfortable showing their feet in public. There may be a number of personal reasons for this. Yoga socks keep your feet covered so you can practice your yoga confidently.
